Chevron Australia Downstream has an exciting opportunity for a Counsel / Senior Counsel to join the Legal team. Reporting to the Chief Corporate Counsel, this permanent role will be based in Brisbane.

This position will suit an experienced legal professional looking for exposure to an international business and will provide day-to-day advice on a broad range of legal matters.

Key responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Provide legal advice and counsel on Australian regulatory issues including with respect to existing downstream operations, health, environment & safety (HES), energy transition, and social & corporate governance issues.
  • Offer general corporate and legal advice on compliance requirements, risk exposures and mitigation in areas such as corporate governance, employment, HES, intellectual property, information technology, competition law, property, and procurement/supply chain.
  • Draft, review and negotiate complex contracts across a full range of commercial matters, transactions and business activities ensuring Chevron’s interests are protected and advanced.
  • Provide strategic advice on contractual negotiations and resolution of disputes.
  • Work as one global team with a wide range of internal stakeholders and subject matter experts to achieve business results.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with all levels of Chevron’s organisation in and outside of Australia to understand the Chevron Australia Downstream business, its strategy, and priorities in order to provide excellent legal support.
  • Provide client training and instruction on various aspects of the law, including compliance and contracting.
  • Select, instruct, and manage outside counsel in compliance with Chevron’s Outside Counsel Guidelines & processes.

Qualifications:

Knowledge, skills, and experience:

  • Law degree (LLB, Juris Doctorate or other advanced law degree) and admission as a legal practitioner in Queensland or eligible to become so.

  • A strong foundation in either corporate and commercial or energy and resources preferred.

  • Demonstrated skill and experience in providing quality, timely and client-focused advice and counsel.

  • High ethical standards and ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

  • Effective in creating and maintaining high client confidence and satisfaction, communicating clearly, simply and directly with excellent professionalism.

  • Demonstrated skill and experience in handling legal matters independently, working collaboratively with clients and other in-house counsels.

  • A highly motivated self-starter capable of working in a fast-paced team environment and collaborating with business clients, other in-house counsel, outside counsel and staff.
