The Strategic Issues & Litigation Group (SI&L) is responsible for the oversight, evaluation, and management of complex, high-stakes litigation and investigations, management of retained counsel, and other functions. The Counsel/Senior Counsel to be hired will be part of SI&L’s tightly integrated team coordinating legal initiatives and providing comprehensive, high-quality legal advice and advocacy. The Counsel/Senior Counsel is expected to be an involved, strongly productive member of the SI&L team. Strong analytical, problem solving, and oral and written communication skills are essential. The ability to work closely and collaboratively with in-house counsel and legal analysts and outside law firms is critical.

This position will be part of the team reporting to the Chief Counsel for Strategic Issues & Litigation of Chevron Corporation. The attorney will oversee eDiscovery in high-stakes litigation for SI&L and advise on complex eDiscovery-related issues. The position requires an attorney with substantial experience in eDiscovery in complex, high-stakes litigation and with a commitment to learning and expanding his or her skill set.

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee eDiscovery management for SI&L’s complex, multijurisdictional litigation docket in federal and state court.
  • Provide substantive legal advice on complex eDiscovery issues and disputes and serve as SI&L’s thought leader on these issues.
  • Partner with Chevron’s Law eDiscovery team to identify, test, deploy and manage cutting edge and innovative eDiscovery tools, technology solutions and processes for SI&L.
  • Oversee all aspects of SI&L’s document collection, review and production in conjunction with document review vendors, in-house and outside counsel, and eDiscovery project managers.
  • Serve as SI&L’s primary point of contact regarding eDiscovery projects, execution, implementation and status.
  • Provide strategic advice and guidance on document preservation and data collection issues for SI&L while maintaining alignment with the company’s discovery strategies.
  • Provide strategic advice and guidance on discovery responses and discovery-related agreements and negotiations for SI&L while maintaining alignment with other litigation teams at the company.
  • Partner with internal teams (including Chevron’s Law eDiscovery team), outside counsel and litigation vendors on legal issues related to eDiscovery and information governance policies, strategies, and workflows.
  • Serve as SI&L’s advisor on internal policies related to the creation, use, retention and disposition of company information.
  • Conduct factual and legal research, including witness interviews.
  • Create SI&L’s eDiscovery budgets and manage compliance with the budgets.
  • Keep abreast of case law and federal, state, and local rules, and other statutory developments impacting eDiscovery.
  • Work closely with Chevron business partners, Corporate Leads, Legal Analysts, eDiscovery Project Manager, and outside counsel to deliver results.
  • Lead the completion and quality control of deliverables for SI&L.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited U.S. law school.
  • Admission to practice law in at least one state or the District of Columbia.*
  • Minimum of 5 years of eDiscovery litigation experience, including experience with all stages of the Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM).
  • Substantial experience with eDiscovery tools and document review platforms.
  • Substantial experience with discovery-related motion practice.
  • Substantial experience drafting, negotiating and litigating ESI protocols, case management orders and protective orders.
  • Demonstrated success working on complex, multi-jurisdiction litigation matters in federal and state courts, including experience with preservation, discovery, and other procedural requirements in federal and state court and the corresponding impacts on the litigation.
  • Demonstrated practical understanding of privilege and work product protection, evidence collection and handling, investigation and expert and fact witness management, and impacts to complex litigation strategy.
  • Successful proven ability to organize and manage many different workstreams, collaborate with outside counsel and internal team(s), set and maintain calendars, schedules and agenda, and keep communications clear and timely.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including legal drafting and negotiation.
  • Articulate, detail-oriented and hard-working.
  • Ability to work independently, but within a team-focused environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in eDiscovery practice group of a premier law firm managing large, complex eDiscovery matters.

*The successful candidate will need to meet the bar admission requirements in the jurisdiction of his or her place of work. California allows out of state attorneys to register as in-house counsel.
