Maura Abeln Smith joined International Paper Co. as its senior vice president and general counsel. In this position, she has overall responsibility for the operation of International Paper’s legal staff and for providing legal counsel to the corporation and its board.
Prior to joining International Paper, Ms. Smith was senior vice president, chief restructuring officer, general counsel and secretary of Owens Corning in Toledo, Ohio.
Before joining Owens Corning in 1998, Ms. Smith had been vice president and general counsel of GE Plastics in Pittsfield, Mass., which she joined in 1991. She was also a partner in the law firm of Baker & McKenzie.
Ms. Smith is a 1977 graduate of Vassar College. She received her Masters degree from Oxford University, where she was a Rhodes Scholar, and her J.D. degree from the University of Miami School of Law, which she attended as a John M. Olin Fellow in Law & Economics.
