Named Outstanding Woman Leader by Texas Executive Women
Marie Yeates, a partner in the Houston office of Vinson & Elkins L.L.P., was recognized for her business success and community service at the annual Women on the Move luncheon in Houston, sponsored by Texas Executive Women. The award is conveyed annually to 10 outstanding Houston-area women leaders.
Ms. Yeates has been head of the Vinson & Elkins’ appellate section since 1991, a group that now boasts over two dozen lawyers, and also serves on the firm’s management committee. She was named one of America’s Top 50 Litigators in The National Law Journal in 2001. In addition, Yeates spearheads the Women’s Initiative for Vinson & Elkins, a project that works to improve the recruitment and retention of women attorneys and increase the representation of women in leadership positions at the firm.
Last year, Ms. Yeates served as the chair for the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast Women’s Initiative and she helped raise more than $592,000.
Ms. Yeates graduated from Louisiana State University with a B.S. in accounting (summa cum laude) in 1977 and the Louisiana State University School of Law in 1980 (Order of the Coif; Editor-in-Chief, Louisiana Law Review). She served as a law clerk to Judge Alvin B. Rubin, U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals from 1980-1981. She joined Vinson & Elkins in 1981. Her principal area of practice is civil appellate law.
