On January 24, 2001 the Coca-Cola Company announced that Deval Patrick was named general counsel. He will succeed Joseph R. Gladden, Jr., who has announced his plans to retire after a distinguished career with the company.

Patrick is currently the vice president and general counsel at Texaco and is a member of the company’s Executive Council. Prior to joining Texaco, Patrick was partner with the Boston firm of Day, Berry & Howard, where he oversaw major commercial litigation.

From 1994-1997, Patrick served as assistant attorney general, Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice. Earlier in his career, he was a litigation partner with the Boston firm of Hill & Barlow and a staff attorney with the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund.

A member of the boards of various charitable and business organizations including the United Airlines Corporation and the Ford Foundation, Patrick received his A.B., cum laude, from Harvard College in 1978 and his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1982. He is also the recipient of several honorary doctorate of law degrees.
