UPS Named Employer of Choice By Minority Corporate Counsel Association
Washington, DC − The Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA) has named the law department of UPS its 2011 Employer of Choice Award winner for the Southwest Region. UPS was selected from law departments of corporations across the Southwest United States for demonstrating a commitment to diversity and creating and maintaining an inclusive workplace. The company will be recognized at MCCA’s Diversity Honors Gala in September.
UPS has long maintained a culture of inclusion. A signatory of “A Call to Action – Diversity in the Legal Profession,” the company also established a Legal Department Diversity committee to spearhead diversity efforts. The law department also supports the work of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity, an organization of corporate chief legal officers and law firm managing partners dedicated to creating a truly diverse legal profession. Teri McClure, UPS Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, is a founding member of the Leadership Council and serves on its Board of Directors.
“UPS’s status as a global leader gives it a unique opportunity to champion diversity,” said MCCA Executive Director Veta T. Richardson. “UPS has seized that opportunity and set a standard for other companies to follow, making it a true Employer of Choice.”
“UPS is very excited that MCCA has honored our law department for our commitment to diversity,” commented McClure. “It is especially rewarding to be recognized by MCCA, an organization with whom we share a commitment to diversity in the legal profession. At UPS we believe people do their best when they feel pride in their contributions, when they are treated with dignity and when their talents are encouraged to flourish in an environment that embraces diversity. These guiding principles are the foundation of the UPS Legal Department.”
UPS and four other regional winners will be honored at MCCA’s inaugural Diversity Honors Gala at the Lincoln Center in New York City on September 27. The red-carpet evening will begin with an Oscar-like awards program in the Starr Theater that combines honors with entertainment, followed by an elegant VIP Dinner Reception in Alice Tully Hall. MCCA also will recognize Diversity Innovators, corporate legal departments and the law firms that serve them that implement outstanding diversity programs. And one individual will be honored with MCCA’s first Lifetime Achievement Award.
