Goldman Sachs Supports MCCA’s Scholarship Program
Goldman Sachs recently donated $10,000 to MCCA® to support the association's Professional Development Series of the Lloyd M. Johnson, Jr. Scholarship Program. The goal of the scholarship program is to promote academic excellence and diversity in law schools by awarding 10 newly accepted law students from disadvantaged backgrounds with scholarships to help defray educational expenses.
The Professional Development Series equips the scholars with skills that will help them flourish in law school and succeed in the workplace. The series is conducted primarily in the form of webinars (online seminars) and teleclassees (conference call seminars) with the scholars. Planned topics for the series include techniques for writing cover letters, resumes, and legal memos; interviewing skills; internships tips; and approaches for studying and taking exams. Goldman Sachs' donation will support all of these resources and activities for the coming year.
"This donation from Goldman Sachs will help us provide our scholarship and fellowship recipients with the additional professional training they will need to understand the unwritten rules of the legal workplace," says Veta Richardson, executive director, MCCA.
In 2004, MCCA instituted the Lloyd M. Johnson, Jr. Scholarship Program to help prime the diversity pipeline in the legal profession. Each of the 10 scholarship winners receive $10,000 a year for three years. In addition to the Professional Development Series, the components of the scholarship program include providing prominent members of the legal community as mentors and MCCA's support in locating first-year internships at leading corporate law departments.
