We have an exciting opportunity in the Global Privacy & Data Law Group of the General Counsel’s Organization! This position will involve partnering with colleagues globally on legal issues related to privacy, data management and artificial intelligence (AI) to support and strength our enterprise functions. This position will report to the Chief Privacy Counsel and is a hybrid role based in New York.
Here are just some examples of what you will do in this role:
- Advise on how to enhance our global privacy and data management program
- Coordinate with operational and compliance teams to assess privacy, data management and AI legal issues arising in the context of our products/ services and enterprise activities
- Work collaboratively with business unit lawyers to draft, negotiate and resolve contractual issues arising in our agreements
- Partner with Government Affairs to assess new U.S. privacy and AI legislation
- Support privacy due diligence and integration for our M&A activities

Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications:
- JD (or equivalent) and licensed to practice law in the United States
- 6+ years of relevant privacy experience in a law firm and/or in-house legal environment
- Experience with privacy regulations such as the GDPR, CCPA and GLBA with a strong understanding of the common requirements arising from these laws
- Experience advising product teams on how develop a programmatic approach to the nuanced legal and policy requirements arising in the privacy/data space
- Experience engaging with policymakers and lobbyists on legislative tracking and consultations
Preferred qualifications:
- CIPP/US and/or CIPP/EU (Certified Information Privacy Professional) accreditation
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey clear advice and provide pragmatic and business-oriented solutions
- Strong executive presence and ability to influence stakeholders on cross functional teams at all levels
- Big picture thinker who is intellectually curious, with the ability to resolve novel, complex issues with a resourceful, can-do attitude
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and build excellent relationships with legal colleagues and business clients, while prioritizing multiple challenging tasks and managing stakeholder expectations
- Willingness and flexibility to be a team player, and take on new responsibilities and challenges as American Express and its businesses continue to evolve
