Joan Guggenheimer has joined Bank One Corporation as chief legal officer and head of its law, compliance, and government relations department. She will serve on the planning group, the company’s executive management team, and will report directly to Bank One Chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon.
Ms. Guggenheimer had been general counsel of Citigroup’s Global Corporate and Investment Bank, where she also had responsibility for government, regulatory, and community affairs. Her other positions at Citigroup included deputy general counsel for litigation and general counsel of the institutional businesses. In addition, she served as head of diversity for Smith Barney, cohead of Citigroup’s anti-money laundering group, and, last year, as co-general counsel of Citigroup.
Ms. Guggenheimer earned a bachelor’s degree from Binghamton University and a law degree from Columbia University, where she was editor of the Law Review.
After clerking in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, she became a litigator at Davis Polk and Wardwell in 1980.
She joined the legal department of Smith Barney in 1985, and held a variety of positions at the firm and at parent Citigroup.
