Chevron Corporation Named Employer of Choice By Minority Corporate Counsel Association
Washington, D.C. – The Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA) has named the Law Function of Chevron Corporation its 2012 Employer of Choice Award winner for the Western Region. Chevron was selected from law department applicants of corporations across the Western United States for demonstrating a commitment to diversity and creating and maintaining an inclusive workplace. The company will be recognized at MCCA’s Diversity Honors Gala in September.
With operations across the globe, Chevron values the rich diversity of ideas, experience and skills its employees bring to the company. The Law Function’s diversity program consists of targeted recruitment of minority legal professionals, promotion of diverse attorneys to management positions, and establishment of a Law Function Diversity Council. The council oversees diversity initiatives, including promoting diversity among Chevron’s outside counsel and supporting diverse legal organizations. Its attorneys are also active in the membership and leadership of many diverse legal organizations.
One result of these efforts is that more than 30 percent of Chevron’s attorneys are women. Also, 18 percent of Chevron’s managing counsel are diverse and 12 percent are women.
“Chevron’s leadership team recognizes that a diverse and inclusive law department enables its clients to receive legal advice from varied perspectives,” said Joseph K. West, MCCA’s President and CEO. “This philosophy enables the Law Function to play critical roles in Chevron’s major business decisions around the world, and has helped make the company the industry leader it is today.”
“Diversity is one of Chevron’s core values. Because we are attorneys working within a multinational business organization, the issues that we face require not only legal acumen, but also an understanding of the diverse venues in which we do business,” said Hewitt Pate, Vice President and General Counsel, Chevron Corporation. “It is essential that the Law Function promotes diversity within its organization to support Chevron’s business around the world. We are honored that the Minority Corporate Counsel Association is recognizing Chevron’s Law Department for its commitment to diversity.”
Chevron and four other regional winners will be honored at MCCA’s Diversity Honors Gala at Lincoln Center in New York City on September 11. The evening will begin with a red-carpet reception followed by the awards program in the Starr Theater that combines honors with entertainment, ending with an elegant VIP Reception in Alice Tully Hall. MCCA will also recognize Diversity Innovators, corporate legal departments, and law firms or legal associations that implement outstanding diversity programs. And one individual will be honored with MCCA’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.
Hosting the gala will be Sunny Hostin, attorney and multi-platform journalist. Hostin is CNN’s legal analyst and a contributor for In Session on TruTV. She is also an anchor on ABC News’ World News Now and America This Morning.
