Profiles of Leading Law Departments and Firms
- Thomas L. Sager
- Employer of Choice
- Special Achievement
Throughout the year, MCCA® publicly recognizes corporate law departments, law firms, and individuals for their diversity efforts. In the pages that follow, Diversity & the Bar® presents profiles of the 2005 recipients of the following three awards: Thomas L. Sager, Employer of Choice, and the Special Achievement awards.
- Named in honor of the vice president and assistant general counsel of DuPont Company, the "Thomas L. Sager" Award recognizes law firms that have demonstrated a sustained commitment to improve the hiring, retention, and promotion of diverse attorneys.
- The "Employer of Choice" Award spotlights general counsel who are industry leaders for their commitment to diversity and success in building and maintaining an inclusive corporate legal department.
- The "Special Achievement" Award is presented to general counsel of an organization that falls outside of the traditional corporate setting, such as governmental agencies, in recognition of their development of programs that can serve as a model for other law departments to advance diversity and inclusion.
The winners of these awards have a lot in common—they all decided early on to make diversity a priority. They also have an established foundation for successful diversity initiatives; a strong communications strategy about diversity throughout; commitment starting at the senior management level; and inclusiveness goals that are linked to their corporate plan. Many of the honorees have also integrated diversity initiatives into their human resources processes, and they have hired, trained, and promoted people with various cultural backgrounds.
The awards were presented at five diversity dinners in the following geographic regions: Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, South/Southwest, Northeast, and Western. In 2005, MCCA plans to continue to publicly recognize companies and individuals for their inclusiveness efforts. If there is an organization or person that should be brought to MCCA's attention, go to www.mcca.com for nomination instructions.
