Company: Entergy
Position: Pro Bono Counsel
Location: New Orleans, LA

Description: Entergy’s Legal, Ethics & Compliance Department is seeking a highly motivated leader to conduct strategic development and day-to-day execution of the Department’s Pro Bono program. A successful candidate for this position will be expected to develop and drive the Department-wide pro bono program and will be seen as an industry leader. Pro Bono Counsel will work closely with the General Counsel and the Department’s Pro Bono and Community Service Committee to implement new programs that grow, promote, and advance the Department’s pro bono efforts and strategy.

Entergy’s Pro Bono Counsel will have responsibility for leadership, management and administration of the Pro Bono Program:

LEADERSHIP

  • Design and implement a strategic plan for pro bono, working in consultation with Department leadership and the Pro Bono and Community Service Committee
  • Build consensus and enthusiasm among leadership and members of the Department
  • Build trusting internal relationships and become central point of contact and resident expert on pro bono-related issues
  • Build teams to participate in large pro bono projects across groups and offices, as well as collaborations with other departments
  • Advise upon the Department’s Pro Bono policies and procedures
  • Develop, evaluate, and assess pro bono projects, matters, processes, relationships, and delivery systems
  • Support and build awareness of participation by Legal Department personnel in community service initiatives, including serving as a liaison to the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility Group
  • Act as the public face of the pro bono program, promoting the Department and Company’s relationships with key external pro bono stakeholders in our communities, locally and nationally. These stakeholders include customers, local legal services and pro bono organizations, national pro bono policy makers, the media, law schools, and charitable and public service organizations. Through these relationships, Pro Bono Counsel should be able to influence pro bono policy locally, statewide, and nationally.

MANAGEMENT

  • Meet with attorneys to talk about the kinds of issues and cases in which those attorneys want to be involved, and then creatively craft ways to match them with appropriate engagements
  • Visit Department offices to meet with lawyers and local providers to create targeted and meaningful pro bono opportunities
  • Develop relationships with community organizations such as legal services, pro bono projects, non-profits, and other community agencies as referral sources, partners, and mentors
  • Identify appropriate engagements for the lawyers in the Department, including individual representations for low-income clients, impact litigation for classes of clients, and transactional work for not for-profit and low-income entrepreneurial businesses
  • Coordinate and conduct training programs; develop pro bono resources for use by volunteers
  • Analyze conflict-of-interest issues, assess both direct and business conflicts, evaluate risk management issues, and ensure the proper transfer and termination of cases
  • Collaborate with management, Corporate Social Responsibility, and Communications groups to identify opportunities and to promote and publicize pro bono efforts
  • Evaluate requests for pro bono services and funding
  • Personally maintain an active practice representing clients on a pro bono basis, with a primary focus on providing representation to persons of limited means, and supervising other lawyers’ and paralegals’ pro bono work

ADMINISTRATION

  • Monitor actual and projected time and dollars expended by the Department on pro bono and community service matters
  • Establish best practice policies so that matters can be appropriately tracked internally
  • Report performance internally as well as to national publications and legal services partners
  • Develop and administer awards and recognition programs
