An opportunity exists within the legal team supporting American Express Global Commercial Services (GCS), which provides a broad range of card, lending and banking products, corporate expense management programs and digital solutions to small, medium, large and multinational companies around the globe. This role specifically supports: the Corporate Product and Marketing Teams on a wide range of legal issues impacting the development and marketing of commercial products and services.

Here’s just some of what you’ll do in this role:

  • Provide legal advice and guidance on a wide range of GCS matters related to the development and marketing of (i) proprietary virtual payment products and other travel and entertainment-related products, (ii) Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) initiatives and products and (iii) consulting and advisory services.
  • Review and approve product marketing, sales and servicing assets for accuracy, consistency and compliance with existing guidelines, financial and marketing/advertising regulations and laws, including but not limited to UDAP and brand alignment. 
  • Draft and negotiate a variety of commercial agreements, including partner, co-brand, marketing and vendor agreements
  • Partner closely with client teams to understand their concerns and challenges, and use your creativity and practical problem solving to quickly action solutions
  • Work closely with other stakeholders including Compliance, Privacy and Public Affairs/Brand to ensure application of policies, procedures, and practices to comply with all applicable laws and regulations

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and J.D. and qualified to practice law in relevant jurisdiction
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in a transactional legal or compliance practice

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest in relationship building, developing a deep understanding of business needs and objectives with close partnership with business clients, compliance and other cross-functional departments
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to convey advice clearly and synthesize complex issues for differing audiences
  • Commitment to excellence, strong client orientation, comfort with gray areas and decisiveness in such situations, demonstrated leadership driving results
  • Demonstrated creative thinking, comfort making contributions beyond strictly legal issues, delivery of practical business solutions, with the experience, communication, and influence skills to convey confidence when solutions are not clearly defined
  • Self-starter with ability to resolve complex issues; capable of handling multiple assignments simultaneously; resourceful, “can-do” approach; focus on finishing the task at hand
