Position: Benefits Corporate Counsel

Description: Work hard, have fun and make history with Amazon’s legal team. We are looking for an attorney with 7+ years employee benefits experience to help support our growing people experience and technology team and global benefits program. Employee benefits experience outside the US is a plus but is not required.

You will serve as one of the primary lawyers responsible for supporting Amazon’s global benefits team with a focus on both US and non-US based health and welfare benefit and retirement plans. Your responsibilities will include counseling senior leaders, employee benefits professionals, and plan fiduciaries on day-to-day benefits matters, fiduciary compliance, plan governance, and legal compliance (e.g., compliance relating to ERISA, the Internal Revenue Code, COBRA, HIPAA, ACA and other federal laws as well as applicable state laws such as the SFHCO) and applicable country-specific compliance for health and welfare and retirement benefits offered outside the US (e.g., compliance relating to statutory and regulatory requirements for health and welfare and retirement benefits in each applicable country, and local insurance and/or pension requirements and associated contracts in each applicable country, etc.). You will also support due diligence, negotiation and implementation of M&A transactions with regard to employee benefit matters involving U.S. employees. Principal duties include but are not limited to advising the benefits team on daily matters, participating in long-term benefits planning, drafting and amending plan documents, reviewing SPDs, SMMs, and participant communications, as well as reviewing and negotiating benefits-related provisions in contracts with service providers. Responsibilities also include managing benefits litigation/subrogation, ERISA document requests, QDROs, QMCSOs, government agency investigations, audits and administrative charges, developing and delivering training, as well as the assessment and supervision of outside counsel. This position will work actively with internal clients and the business as well as our People Experience and Technology team and requires the ability to travel and work extended hours when necessary.

This role will report to the Associate General Counsel, Labor & Employment.

The preferred location for this role would be in Seattle, DC, NYC, Sunnyvale, or Santa Monica.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $123,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $229,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits. Open to the following strong internal candidates with demonstrated success: (1) Associate CC candidates with less than 7 years legal experience but with 5+ years of employee benefits experience, and (2) CC candidates with 7+ years legal experience with 5+ of those years in a field related to employee benefits (e.g., medical insurance, health plan administration, etc.) and a strong willingness to learn to get up to speed.

Qualifications:

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • 7+ years of benefits legal experience is required
  • J.D. degree and membership in good standing in one state bar is required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment even in ambiguous situations based on common sense and analysis of risk
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong analytical and computer skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects at once, follow through and meet deadlines using pragmatic judgment in ambiguous situations
  • Ability to work independently while being able to contribute successfully to cross-functional teams
